Mikey’s in the Mustang became a reality in 2024 with the release of We Were Golden and the subsequent Soundtrack for the upcoming film. The music, story and concept all come out of Mike’s experience of living in Southern California. The story is a fictional reflection of what those times were like.
Mike, who grew up in Southern California in the 1960’s. Like so many of his peers he was first involved in the folk-rock scene. His work consisted of playing local college and high schools as well as a touring ensemble known as Sensitive Reflection in late 1967.
Uncle Sam interrupted his college years with a tour in Vietnam. Once home he got a job, got married, five kids, and became a successful entrepreneur far from the music scene.
Some 50 years later encouraged by his family and a friend at the age of 75 he entered the studio for the first time to record a legacy collection of songs he wrote decades before. What followed was a desire to create something special about living in Southern California in the 1960’s. His songwriting became prolific as it relates to the story behind the film “We Were Golden” as he imagined the soundtrack before he had written the story. Each song relates to a certain scene within the film. It’s a journey of friendship, music, and the belief that everyone has the opportunity to be golden.
He gathered a group of outstanding professionals to help create the sound that would become Mikey’s in the Mustang. Lead by Dave Blackburn who took Mike’s dream and made it a reality.
